New to me!

We went to the Farmers' Market on Main Street, Downtown
Columbia on Saturday.  We've been there before, but have never seen these!  Just down from the market, we saw these things that looked like tractor seats with metal drums things in front of them.  We had no idea what they were!I thought maybe people sat on the seats and warmed their hands over the drums

On the way back to the car, we passed the seats again, only this time they were filled with kids.  I asked one of their parents what the seat things were and they told us "drums!"  Duh!  Didn't' even think of that!  All the kids started playing away - they sounded pretty good!

No idea what these were, but they were colorful!

Home Teacher/Visiting Teacher to the WAS Sisters

When Sister Barton and Sister Munson came to the mission a year ago, President Holm assigned Jack and me to visit them once a month and give them the Home Teaching and Visiting Teaching messages.  As part of our calling, we were also to look after them and assist them as needed.  These two sisters are amazing!  They probably worked, physically worked, twice as hard as any of us in the office!  They drove into woods searching for lost Sisters, they encountered some that were not happy to see them, and they taught and ministered to many, many of Jesus' lost sheep.  Over the past year, they prepared women to go to the temple and receive their endowments and have gone to the temple with them when they did proxy baptisms for deceased family members. What beautiful women these two are!!!

Jack and me with Sister Barton and Sister Munson

Congaree National Park - One of my favorite places!

When Leila and Brent were here last September, we took them to Fort Jackson for church Sunday morning, then, while we were still in "church clothes," we stopped and walked through Congaree National Park.  I love walking on the boardwalk!  I have more pictures of the park, but thought I'd start with these two, since they're handy.  Becky sent me the one of us with her family.  They came to visit last summer.

Jack and me on the boardwalk - I think we had taken our tags off at the Fort and forgot to put them back on.

It was SO hot that day!  If y'all zoom in, I'm sure you can see tiny pieces of tissue stuck all over my face.  Hahaha!

My final talk in Chapin Branch

Brother Jacobs asked Jack and me to speak in Sacrament Meeting on February 22 - two days after our "farewell party."  Who knew we wouldn't be leaving until the 15th of April?  :o)  Anyway, here it is, recorded for posterity...

A few months ago, two Sister Missionaries were teaching a couple who seemed interested in the Gospel and were progressing very well, or so the Sisters thought.  One day they announced that they were no longer interested in learning about the Church or being baptized.  They told the Sisters, “We just don’t want to jump through your hoops.”
I have thought a lot about that statement.  As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I don’t feel like I am compelled to jump through hoops.  I assume that the couple was talking about the commandments members are asked to keep before and after they are baptized.  I wondered how many commandments are required for membership in this church.  According to Preach My Gospel, there are about a dozen commandments the Lord requires us to keep for membership in His church.  Some of them are specific and some are very general and may be many faceted.  Here’s the list..

We are asked to be obedient,
to pray often,
to study the scriptures,
to keep the Sabbath Day holy,
to be baptized and confirmed.
to follow the prophet,
to keep the 10 Commandments,
to live the Law of Chastity,
to obey the Word of Wisdom,
to keep the Law of Tithing,
to observe the Law of the Fast,
to obey and honor the laws of the land.

Obedience is the first law of heaven.  We are given commandments because our Heavenly Father loves us.  He knows what we need and what we need to do to be happy.  He gives us commandments so we can choose to obey.  If we obey, He will bless us.  He has told us, “I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise.  (D&C 82:10)
I was intrigued by the Visiting Teaching message for the month of January.  Elder D. Todd Christofferson said, “As we walk in obedience to the principles and commandments of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we enjoy a continual flow of blessings promised by God in His covenant with us.  Those blessings provide the resources we need to act rather than simply be acted upon as we go through life…Obedience gives us greater control over our lives…”  If we keep the commandments, the Lord is bound to bless us.  It is amazing to me that He has given us the power to control our lives.

Prayer doesn’t seem like a requirement to me.  Prayer is a great privilege!  Because of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we can pray to Almighty God and He will hear and answer our prayers!  As it says in the Primary theme, we can pray to Heavenly Father, anytime and anywhere!  It is comforting to know that He is always there for us.  He will comfort us, help us, strengthen us and guide us.  He will forgive us and teach us.  He is our Father.  He loves it when we pray to him, and hopefully we don’t only pray to Him when we are in need.  We have so much to be grateful for.  We should be thanking Him every day – many times every day!

We’ve been asked to study the scriptures!  How blessed we are to have the Word of God at our fingertips! We’ve not only got the Bible, but we have a second witness of Jesus Christ, The Book of Mormon - also the Pearl of Great Price and the Doctrine and Covenants.   These scriptures are written records of God’s dealings with His children as recorded by prophets under the influence of the Holy Ghost.  We are also blessed to have the words of latter-day apostles and prophets who teach us over the pulpit every 6 months during General Conference.  As we study the scriptures, the door is opened to personal revelation that will guide us in our lives and strengthen our testimonies and knowledge of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  I loved Sister Smith telling us that when she read the Book of Mormon in French, she saw things that she had never seen before.  Every time we read the Book of Mormon, we learn something new that is pertinent to our lives at that moment!

Keeping the Sabbath Day holy is a commandment that, when kept, sets us apart from most of the world.  Elder Bruce R. McConkie said, “The matter of Sabbath observance remains…as one of the great tests which divides the righteous from the worldly and wicked.” Great blessings are promised when we keep the Sabbath Day holy!  In Leviticus we are told, “Ye shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.  If ye walk in my statutes and keep my commandments and do them, then I will give you rain in due season and the land shall yield her increase.  And ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.  And I will give you peace in the land…For I will have respect unto you and make you fruitful and establish my covenant with you.  And I will set my tabernacle (that is my temple) among you and I will walk among you and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.”  On the Sabbath Day we enjoy a rest from our labors.  We strengthen one another when we attend church services.  We partake of the sacrament to remember the sacrifice and atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  We renew our covenants and show that we are willing to repent of our sins.  As we keep the Sabbath Day holy our lives will be filled with joy and peace.

Most of us, if we are over the age of eight, have been baptized and confirmed members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  By doing so, we entered into a covenant with the Lord that we will always remember Him and keep His commandments.  We have also promised to stand as witnesses of God at all times and promised to help bear one another’s burdens.  In return, God promises us that we are forgiven of our sins and blesses us with the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost.  I am so grateful for the Gift of the Holy Ghost.  I testify that He comforts us, He warns us of impending dangers, He testifies to us of the truth, He teaches us and He guides and directs us in everything we do IF we keep the commandments and are worthy of His influence.

We, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are asked to follow the prophet.  The Lord has told us, “What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.”   D&C 1:38 God has always sent prophets to reveal His truths to His children.  He raised up Joseph Smith to restore His gospel to the earth in this final dispensation.  President Thomas S. Monson guides and directs the Church today.  He is God’s spokesperson.  He will not lead us astray!  Elder Jeffrey R. Holland spoke to a group of Seminary and Institute teachers this month at the Tabernacle in SLC.  He said, “We know for certain that if or when everything else in the latter days is down or dying: if governments, economics, industries and institutions crumble; if societies and cultures become a quagmire of chaos and insecurity, nevertheless through it all the gospel of Jesus Christ and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that bears the gospel to the world will stand undefiled in God’s hand until the very Son of God Himself comes to rule and reign as Lord of lords and King of kings.  Nothing is more certain in this world.  Nothing is more sure.  Nothing could be more of an antidote to anxiety.  I testify that we are safe in following the Lord’s chosen prophet!

We are asked to keep the Ten Commandments so that we will know what to do and what to avoid in order to receive the blessings God wants to give us.  If we keep the Ten Commandments, He will give us joy, peace of conscience, and lasting happiness.  1 – Thou shalt have no other gods before me.  2 – Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.  3 – Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord, thy God in vain.  4 – Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.  5 – Honour thy father and thy mother.  6 – Thou shalt not kill.  7 – Thou shalt not commit adultery.  8 – Thou shalt not steal.  9 – Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.  10 – Thou shalt not covet.  These commandments are still valid today.  They teach us how to worship, show reverence for God and how to treat one another.

Living the law of chastity requires faithfulness in thought and action.  We must keep our thoughts clean and be modest in our dress, speech and actions.  We must avoid pornography in any form.  We should treat the God-given procreative power and our bodies as sacred. Those who keep the law of chastity enjoy the strength that comes from self-control.  They enjoy confidence and trust in their family relationships.  They can enjoy more fully the influence of the Holy Ghost in their lives.

Another requirement of membership in the Lord’s Church is the Word of Wisdom.  Living the Word of Wisdom makes us free!  While some may consider this law of health as restrictive, those who live it realize the great blessing of being free from addictive substances such as alcohol, drugs, coffee, tea and tobacco.  The Lord promises blessings of health, strength, and protection against evil when we live the Word of Wisdom.  People who obey this law are also more receptive to spiritual truths.

Tithing is an ancient, divine law.  The prophet Abraham paid tithes of all he possessed.  It is our privilege, as members of the Lord’s church, to contribute to the growth of the Kingdom of God.  I love paying tithing!  I think it is one of the easiest commandments to keep.  When we pay our tithing, the Lord promises to "...open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it!  (Malachi 3:10)  At only one other time in the scriptures did the Lord open the windows of heaven – and that was during the great flood when Noah was prophet.  The blessings the Lord pours out may be temporal or spiritual, but they will come, and come in great abundance to those who pay an honest tithing.  We can feel confident that our tithing contribution is wisely put to use.  It builds and maintains temples and meeting houses, provides resources for teaching in churches, institutes and seminaries, pays the expenses of spreading the gospel throughout the world.  Elder Arrington pays the bills for the mission here in SC and we have seen, first hand, how much it costs to run a mission.   A friend once said to me, “I wish I had the luxury of paying tithing.  I just can’t afford it.”  Personally, I don’t understand how one could afford NOT to pay tithing!  It may take some faith to get started, but I know from experience that God keeps His promises!

Great blessings are available to those who obey God’s commandment to fast.  We have the opportunity to observe this law on the first Sunday of each month when we go without food and drink for two consecutive meals and contribute what we would pay for those meals to our bishop or branch president.  That money is then used for the care of the poor and the needy.  This contribution really costs us nothing, although we are encouraged to be as generous as our means allow.  As we care for the poor, we help fulfill our baptismal covenants to bear one another’s burdens.

The final requirement of church membership is that we obey and honor the laws of the country in which we live.  We are counseled to be good citizens, to participate in government and the political process and to give community service.

Keeping the commandments brings an overflowing measure of joy into our lives.  Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to become like Him.  He wants us to return to live with Him someday, when our time on this earth is finished.  He wants us to be happy now, and has given us these commandments to insure our happiness in this life and in the world to come.  In D&C 130:20-21 it says, “There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated – and when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.”  I know that the Lord has given us commandments because He loves us.  If we keep His commandments, he is bound to bless us.  If we don’t keep His commandments, we have no promise.

When people say they don’t want to jump through our hoops, I wonder what they do want.  I’m reminded of Elder Holland’s conference talk of April 2014.  He said, “It is a characteristic of our age that if people want any gods at all, they want them to be gods who do not demand much, comfortable gods, smooth gods who not only don’t rock the boat but don’t even row it…”

Like earthly parents who love and care about their children, Heavenly Father sets boundaries and rules for His children – for their protection and for their happiness.  If we want His blessings in our lives, we will keep His commandments.  In Mosiah 2:22, 24, King Benjamin tells us, “And Behold, all that he requires of you is to keep his commandments; and he has promised you that if ye would keep his commandments ye should prosper in the land; and he never doth vary from that which he hath said; therefore, if ye do keep his commandments, he doth bless you and prosper you.  He doth require that ye should do as he hath commanded you, for which if ye do, he doth immediately bless you; and therefore he hath paid you.  And ye are still indebted unto him, and are, and will be forever and ever.” It is our choice.  We can, in many ways, control our destiny.  The Lord has said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”  I pray that we might all choose to do this, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Hope the third time's a charm!

We had an 18-year-old convert baptized a year ago in the Chapin Branch.  He is the only member in his family.  His parents, however, have attended Sacrament Meeting with him several times when he came home from Clemson on weekends.  His dad was recently transferred to Indiana with his job, but his mom has continued to attend Sacrament Meeting with him.  Last Sunday, she came on her own!

I found out last night that his father has tried to attend Sacrament Meeting in Indiana for the past two weeks!  The first week, he looked up an address for the church, but was led to an empty lot.  Last Sunday, he actually called during the week and got the correct address for the church, but when he braved the weather and arrived there, meetings had been cancelled due to winter storms.

We are hoping that he perseveres and tries to attend a third time, and we hope that he succeeds!  This is a wonderful family.  I know their son would love to see them be baptized!

This should have been our transfer...

We came out with 13 of  these beautiful Sister Missionaries!  Also leaving were 4 Elders, a Senior Couple, the Hodges (left) and Sister Munson (front right).  Sister Munson's companion, Sister Barton, goes home in 6 months.  This is the biggest departing group so far, but wait til April!  27 young missionaries and 2 Senior Couples!

The Brunos hosted a drop-in for us - everyone thought we were going home. :o)

President Bruno asked us early in February if he and his family could host a drop-in for us so that Branch members could stop in to tell us goodbye.  At that time, we didn't have a replacement couple in the radar, but they went ahead with the plan.  It was a cold, cold night when we met, but we had a pretty good sized group of our beautiful Chapin Branch friends there.

President and Sister Bruno and their daughters, Claire and Hannah

Santa, AKA Brother Tom Anderson and us

The beautiful Chapin Sisters, Sister Harvey and Sister Burchard

The Kubics

Sister Duvall - Brother Duvall was in FL at the Daytona 500.  He's a former race car driver.

The Gardners

The two amazing Chapin Elders, Elder Arnoldsen and Elder Wilkins.  Elder Arnoldsen was in the Chapin Branch the first 10 1/2 months!  He's moved on now and is serving in Simpsonville.

Two of our 2014 converts, Larry and Mary Roberts.  They were contacted by the Chapin Elders, taught by Temple Square Sisters and they referred back to Chapin where they were baptized and confirmed.  They are two of our eight strongest members!  We LOVE this beautiful couple!

The Barnes - Forest and Monica.  They lived in Milwaukee when Jeff and Angie were there for med school.  They have twin sons who are Baylee's age.
They are heavily involved in choir and band at Chapin High and kept us informed of concerts and competitions.  We have LOVE going to their performances!!!!!

Brother and Sister Cash

The Maynards

Sue and Bill Lee - they were baptized a few months before we came our on our mission - probably May of 2013, because we attended their temple sealing last year in May, as I recollect.  Sue is a genealogist and Bill is a woodworker.  We're going to check out his shop before we go home.

Dean and Wanda Jacobs - Dean is in the Branch Presidency and teaches early morning Seminary.

Love these Dutch Fork Sisters!

I think this pic was taken on the last Sunday we fed these two before Sister Havens (right) went home.  Sister Stoker has a new companion  and continues to serve in Dutch Fork and at Fort Jackson.

You can't decorate an iPad!

The Elder and Sisters in this mission have been waiting for iPads since we came her 18 months ago.  I'm sure we'll be gone before they ever get them.  When the iPads finally arrive, I know a lot of missionaries who will miss their planners.  A missionary's planner pretty much contains their life for the time they are serving in the mission field.  Every minute of every day is accounted for from 6:30 in the morning until 10:30 at night and it's all right there - in the planner.

Some of the missionaries like to decorate the planner covers - front and back.  The Sisters are more prone to decorate, but some of the Elders do too.  Some of the Sisters decorate the Elders' planners for them.  :o)

This is one of the Chapin Sisters' planners

This one belongs to her companion

One of the Dutch Fork Elders did his planner in camo with a soldier on the front,
because on Sundays he is privileged to teach at Fort Jackson.

"What's different about you?"

One of our new branch members was asked that question by someone at his place of employment.  A co-worker has noticed a difference in Larry's demeanor since he was baptized last Spring.  Larry told him that he had been baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He took the man into his office and explained what it has meant to him.  I hear stories like this all the time.

I remember Brother Howe, of the WC Stake High Council telling us in a talk at the Branch that when he walked into his work the Monday after he was baptized, a co-worker exclaimed, "You're as shiny as a new penny!  What's happened to you?"

Unlikely referral source for the Chapin Elders...

We did an apartment inspection in Chapin tonight before we took the Elders to dinner.  As I was checking out the kitchen, I noticed two cool bowls in the dish rack.  "I love your bowls!"  Elder Arnoldsen said, "Those are actually Diane's bowls."  "Diane?"  You know Bill and Diane?  They came to church with us a while back."

The Elders had made a deal with Bill and Diane - if they came to our church, the Elders would go to their church with them.  :o)  They have continued to have them over for dinner and have listened to some of the missionary discussions as well.  When the Elders finish up a discussion, they ask, "Who do you know that might benefit from this discussion?"  Bill and Diane pull out their church directory and give the elders names.

Several members of the congregation have asked about "those two young men who came to church with Bill and Diane."  They've asked, "Are they going to come back?"  :o)

One night the Elders shared a discussion and a song with Bill and Diane.  They were telling people at the church about it and the choir director said, "Bring them to choir practice and we'll have them sing for us."  So they did!  The two sang, "Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy."  The people loved it. Some of them sang along.  One man said, "I haven't heard that song since I was a Baptist!"  A 93-year-old lady cried.

The Chapin Elders are great!  Whether or not they get any baptisms out of the Methodist congregation - they are spreading a lot of good will!   I'm not sure about Bill and Diane.  As Diane said, "I am way too entrenched in our church to change."

He called the temple...

A brother from the South Carolina Columbia Temple called the office a few weeks ago.  He said a young man had called the temple, wanting to know where he could go to attend our church.  The temple worker took his name and address and told him that missionaries would contact him within 24 hours.

I am the Referral Manager for our mission, so I put the information in the system, noting that the man's address was in the same apartment complex - even the same unit - as our WAS Sisters.  WAS stands for Women's Auxiliary Specialists.  Sister Barton and Sister Munson are senior missionaries like we are, only they serve as single sister because they have both lost their spouses.

When President Holm was over the mission, he assigned Jack and me as the WAS Sisters' home teacher and visiting teacher.  We watch out for them, assist them in any way we can and meet with them at least every month to give them the HT and VT lessons.

Last night, they invited us for dinner in conjunction with our monthly visit.  They also invited the West Columbia Zone Leaders, who have been teaching the man who lives in their complex.  They said that he is soon getting baptized and is very excited about it.  :o)

At dinner, we learned a little more about the young man.  He had first searched out the church on mormon.org and was taught on-line for a while.  Then he saw missionaries in Charleston.  A while after than, he lost contact with the church and the missionaries.  Three years later, he once again found himself drawn to the church and that's when he called the temple.  He said, "I don't know why, but something just drew me to the Mormon Church."  Of course, it was the Spirit that prompted him to investigate once again.

He is getting married soon and his fiance  is not interested in the church at all.  In fact she's not very excited about him getting baptized.  He said, "It's just because she doesn't know anything about it." He thinks that someday she'll accept it and be baptized too.

Mayor of Columbia on board to welcome new recruits...

We left the mission last Friday and flew to OKC so we could go to the blessing of a 2 month-old-grandson.  We flew back Monday night

A great majority of the passengers on our flight from Atlanta last night were new recruits, headed for basic training at Ft. Jackson. Just as we were about to land, a flight attendant came over the intercom and asked us to stay in our seats for a minute after the captain turned off the seat belt lights. She said that the Mayor of Columbia, SC had a message for us having to do with our national security. We all wondered what that was all about.
When the lights went off, a passenger just a few rows behind us stood up and introduced himself as Stephen K. Benjamin, Mayor of Columbia, SC He said that there were many young men and women on our flight who had chosen to serve our country and were coming to Fort Jackson for training. He welcomed them to Columbia and thanked them for their choice to serve. Everyone applauded. It was great! Jack snapped this shot of the mayor and one of the recruits as they stopped in the aisle beside us for a photo opportunity. Love my country and love the young men and women who have the desire to keep it free. God bless 'em! :o)

A Preisthhod blessing for a preemie...

Two of our Elders were telling us about a Preisthood blessing they gave the baby daughter of an investigator Wednesday night.  She was born at only 23 weeks of gestation!  She weighs just over a pound and the Elders said she would have fit in the palm of their hands.  They said that the woman's doctors were trying to convince her to have her baby taken off life support.  "But," they said, "That is not what the blessing said!"  The Elders were inspired to bless this baby that she would live and be an instrument in bringing her mother closer to The Lord.

I am thankful for faithful Elders who bear the Priesthood of God and are worthy to give such blessings.

He is somebody's son...

This post doesn't really belong in my mission blog, but I've got something I want to say.  A couple of days ago a convicted sex offender was arrested and sent back to jail for lurking around the parking lot of our elementary school back home.  This is a good thing.  He was clearly in violation of his parole.  I hate what he has done!  I hate the darkness in people's minds that drives them to crimes against children, or anyone else for that matter.

I hate what this man has done and totally agree that he should be off the streets, but as I read  a few of the comments about his arrest I felt sad.  This man is somebody's son.  He is somebody's brother.  He could be somebody's husband or even somebody's father.  Surely what he has done has hurt all of those who love him.  He needs to be stopped and should be rehabilitated if that is possible.  He should probably be kept away from children for the rest of his life.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this... Can we hate the sin, but still love the sinner?  Could we think of the pain he has already caused those who love him or who raised him or grew up with him?  I know how horrible I have felt in the past when one of my own children has done something to hurt someone else, even something as simple as a high-school-breakup.  Parents feel the pain every time their children fall, at least I do.

A short while ago, a young man was arrested for sexual abuse of a minor, dealing harmful materials to a minor, sexual exploitation of a minor, obstruction of justice and seducing or luring a minor through text or Internet.   This young man had attended school with some of my grandchildren.  They were friends with him and with his sister.  My daughter's family knows his family well.  Although not closely related, we share the same last name.  When this arrest happened, I thought, "How does his mother feel?  How is his family going to deal with this heartache?"

What happens in people's minds to cause this behavior?  How can we fix it?  How can we prevent it?  I wish I knew!  I will pray that's these people get the help they need to turn their lives around.  I will pray that I will not do anything to rub salt in the wounds of those who love them.  These people have done bad things, but they are all somebody's sons or daughters.
